Mindset, Self-compassion and Resilience

Passing on a family movie favourite to my daughter this morning, I’d put on the ‘Wizard of Oz’. This brought back wonderful feelings and gave me a sense of going back to my personal roots early in my childhood, all at a time when life seemed simpler.

My daughter is mesmerised by this wonderful movie, and as I was catching glimpses, I paid attention to the character Dorothy who dreamed of a place with no troubles. Dorothy embarks upon an emotional journey when she visits Oz, only to realise how she does love her family and wishes to return home more than anything. I began to think with an analytical head.

I suddenly decided to convert the characters Strawman, Tinman and Lion to three solid elements needed when building solid foundations for your person.

Strawman felt he needed a brain, the Tinman thought he needed a heart, and the lion believed he needed courage and bravery. The Lion believed the only way to overcome fear was to become king, and then he wouldn’t be afraid of anything! Perhaps you can conquer your inner fears by becoming your own king.

Setting off on the yellow brick road, it’s time to find the wizard who can grant their wishes and give them all those needs.

But what does the wizard have to do with this blog?

The wizard suddenly becomes a psychotherapist as he explains what is happening internally to the Lion, Tinman and Strawman.

Using this movie as an analogy, I would say the wizard is you, your internal voice. The wizard is the internal part of yourself that regulates your emotions and enables positive affirmations. Person-centred founder Carl Rogers, may have referred to this ‘wizard’ as the internal locus of evaluation. The skill set to self-navigate one’s self-belief, trust and values from within.

Many people worldwide have experienced criticism, been put down and received plenty of negativity around their self-concept. These experiences are likely to result in being deeply internalised. Remember that you were not born into a world to feel bad about yourself. The negativities projected onto you likely came from a person with their own deep internal wounds.
